Andrew Belnap receives Edmund Outslay Outstanding Discussant Award

Andrew Belnap received the Edmund Outslay Outstanding Discussant Award for his discussion at the Doctoral Consortium of the University of Illinois Symposium on Tax Research. The award honors the late Ed Outslay, who was a dear colleague and mentor to many in the tax research community.
Andrew discussed “The effect of state tax whistleblower laws on state and federal tax avoidance” by Yoojin Lee, Shaphan Ng, Terry Shevlin, and Aruhn Venkat. The discussion emphasized the paper’s policy relevance and significant contribution due to the dearth of research on the deterrence effects of whistleblowing.
Andrew is a 5th year accounting PhD student at UNC. His research focuses on disclosure and tax enforcement. He uses archival and field experiment methodologies to address key questions in accounting research.
