Leading PhD programs sent their students to UNC Kenan-Flagler to attend the seventh annual UNC Tax Doctoral Seminar Jan. 4-7, 2016.
“Future stars in the accounting field come to Chapel Hill to learn from the best tax researchers in the world for a week,” said Doug Shackelford, the Meade H. Willis Distinguished Professor of Taxation and dean of UNC Kenan-Flagler. “Through our partnership with KPMG LLP and the firm’s generous support, we contribute to the study of taxes for the near- and long-term.”
Top doctoral students from Northwestern, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Chicago, Iowa, MIT, Stanford, Connecticut, UNC, Duke, UC-Berkley, WHU – Otto Beisheim School of Management in Germany, and the University of Business and Economics in Vienna came to UNC Kenan-Flagler learn from the best tax scholars in the U.S.
Edward Maydew, the David E. Hoffman Distinguished Professor of Accounting and Director of the UNC Tax Center, organized the tax seminar. “The seminar is unique and continues to be a huge success,” he said. “It is extremely gratifying to help in the development of these talented PhD students.”
Research sessions were led by Maydew, Shackelford and Eva Labro, associate professor of accounting and Michael W. Haley Distinguished Scholar at UNC Kenan-Flagler; Duke professors John Graham and Scott Dyreng; and Wharton professor Jennifer Blouin.
The seminar exposes students of all backgrounds to current tax research and is designed for students from doctoral programs without a PhD tax seminar. Students learn the fundamentals of tax research, and some might wind up adding tax to their set of research interests.
